Ebola: NYSC camp clinics properly equipped – DG

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has said all its camp clinics have been equipped with necessary items for the medical personnel to properly handle any suspected Ebola patient, should such case arises. Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, Director-General of the Scheme, stated this during his visit to Delta State NYSC Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku, saying the scheme was in touch with all state Commissioners of Health to integrate NYSC Camps into their contingency plans in case of any suspected outbreak of Ebola or other communicable diseases. On security issues, the NYSC helmsman stated that the scheme and the various states of the federation were part of an integrated framework geared towards ensuring the safety of corps members throughout the service year in any community where they serve. He disclosed that NYSC directorate headquarters operates a 24-hour distress call centre, with numbers already given to corps members, which they can call in case of emergencies. While describing as pragmatic, its approach to issues concerning the welfare of corps members nationwide, Olawumi assured that should such calls be received, the closest security agency to the place where the distressed corps member is would be immediately contacted to respond. Olawunmi, while congratulating the corps members on their success at their various institutions of study, urged them to regard their call to service as a rare privilege, assuring them that adequate welfare and security arrangements have been put in place for them, both during the orientation course and the service year. He called on the corps members to utilise the opportunity of the 10-day NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme during the orientation course to acquire various skills, be self-employed and eventually become employers of labour rather than roam the streets after service in search of jobs. Olive Essien Etukudo, Delta State NYSC Coordinator, in her speech, reported that a total of 2,844 corps members, comprising of 1367 males and 1477 females, were registered for the 2014 batch ‘B’ Orientation Course.

He said, “The fact that the person who brought the disease was from Liberia does not mean all Liberians were positive of Ebola Virus Disease. “The Liberian President had put measures in place by declaring 90 days emergency in the country beginning from August 6 to strategize on how to stop the spread of the disease to other countries.” Meanwhile, Chuwku has asked the International Community to take up the Ebola challenge as a global issue rather than a regional matter, adding that Ebola has high mortality rate over other diseases and therefore, cannot be neglected by other countries in the world. Chukwu who announced the deteriorating state of other health workers who had contracted Ebola, urged the international community to assist Nigeria in combating the menace. Ebola: FG bans movement of dead bodies

Ebola: FG bans movement of dead bodies

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Khaliru Al-Hassan, on Saturday in Kano declared that the Federal Government has banned movement of dead bodies from within and outside the country as part of measures to avoid the spread of the Ebola Virus. Al-Hassan, who was in Kano during the third meeting of Northern Traditional Leaders on Primary Health-Care, said that transfer of dead bodies is a major factor in the spread of the deadly virus. He also insisted that the Ebola virus has not been found anywhere in Nigeria except Lagos. The minister explained that anybody that died should be buried wherever the incident happened, especially in the person died in the three major Ebola countries—Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. He said, “Henceforth, dead bodies would not be allowed to be transferred from one part of the country to another. Wherever a person died that person would be buried there. We have suspended bringing corpses from outside the country, particularly these three countries – Liberia, Sierra-Leone and Guinea. “The corpses in these three countries should be buried there and we will not allow anybody to come regardless of his position. We have directed the appropriate authorities to ensure that this is not done. Therefore, we want to appeal to people for their understanding. We are not here to politicize. Ebola is not a political disease.” He continued: “Sadly, an American-Liberian brought it into our country. This is very sad, but it is too late now, it has happened. We just have to rise up to the occasion. I will like to assure the entire public that the Federal Government is up and doing. The situation is under control. “We have instituted measures to ensure that it does not spread any further. We are working tirelessly with our partners—WHO, USAID and other international organs. We are doing the best with our international partners to contend the outbreak and we want to dispel rumours that are going round that Ebola is seen in other parts of the country. “
Osun election better than Ekiti poll, says TMG

Osun election better than Ekiti poll, says TMG

The Transition Monitoring Group has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for the smooth conduct of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election. TMG, which is a coalition of civil society groups, said the Osun election was an improvement on the Ekiti State governorship election, which held in June. The Deputy Chairperson of TMG, who led the team to observe the Osun election, Hajiya Goroso Giwa, told our correspondent that the conduct of the Osun election was very commendable, except for some hitches in the some parts of the state. Giwa said, “There was a high turnout of voters and the election has been going on very well. We also observed that in the rural areas, they were able to manage the crowd and the time and the materials that were available. The problem we had was in Ikire in Ifelodun, because as of 2.45pm, some polling units there had not started voting. “Some of the polling units affected included Unit 10, Balogun Imole. They concluded accreditation late, so voting started late; Polling Unit 3, Ward 4, Isale Ofe-Afon, there was also late accreditation and problem with crowd control; Adeyemi Market Ward 4 Unit 6, they also had problem of late accreditation and also had challenges of managing the crowd.” She suggested that the number of INEC officials in urban areas should be increased in future elections, adding that security operatives should also be evenly distributed.

A statement issued by the Greek Health Ministry said the recommendation was after a meeting with the Hellenic Center of Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO). The ministry said the country would take “precautionary measures” at ports and other entry points to monitor people coming into the country. “Our country has a low level of risk in terms of the virus entering the country. “But it is deemed appropriate to issue strict travel instructions to the public and to boost the level of preparedness at the entry gates to the country,” the ministry’s statement said. Greece is just the latest among countries advising travellers to cancel trips to countries affected by the virus. Similarly, India Union’s Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, was reported as saying that the country had taken precautionary steps to deal with any case of the virus. In a statement obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Vardhan recommended that non-essential travel to Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria be deferred. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported 1,603 cases, including 887 deaths (as of Aug. 4), in West Africa from Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. The Indian health minister also said the government would be obtaining details of travellers originating or transiting from Ebola virus affected countries to India from the concerned Airlines and Indian Missions. He said the government would track these persons after their arrival in India, up to their final destination in the country. According to the India’s External Affairs Ministry some 40,000 Indian citizens are currently living in Nigeria. NAN reports that Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, is due to brief members of the diplomatic corps later on Thursday. Chukwu will brief the diplomats on Nigeria’s response to the Ebola virus outbreak, after the country recorded two deaths from the virus in Lagos. The U.S., Germany and France are among those who have warned travellers to cancel trips to the countries affected by the virus.
