UPDATE ON THE ASUU STRIKE..........

UPDATE ON THE ASUU STRIKE..........

Academic activities may be paralyzed on university campuses nationwide as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared indefinite strike action to compel the Federal Government to implement the agreement reached with the union in October 2009.

Indications to this emerged at the University of Ibadan when the academic staff of the university received a text message which reads Good morning, this is to officially inform you that ASUU has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite STRIKE from Monday, July 1, 2013. Await further briefing.

ASUU UI.

Immediately the text was received, academic staff who had been expectant, praised the decision of the National Executive Council (NEC) on the decision to proceed on strike to improve the condition of the nations universities and improve quality of service delivery.

The NEC of ASUU, which concluded its meeting at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, was said to have considered the state of implementation at the universities and concluded that the Federal Government had not been faithful in implementing the agreements substantially.

Although, ASUU is to officially address a world press conference today, sources at the NEC said the decision to proceed on strike included failure of the Federal Government to meet the funding requirements for revitalisation of Nigerian universities; progressive increase of annual budgetary allocation to education to 26 per cent between 2009 and 2020, earned allowances, and setting up of research and development units by companies operating in Nigeria and teaching and research equipment provision to laboratories and classrooms.

According to the source, ASUU took the decision after observing all possible means of making government to implement the agreement yielded no results.

Meanwhile, immediately the text message circulated, some lecturers at the Premier University who were slated for lectures did not go while students waited in vain.

The University of Ibadan undergraduate resumed the second semester last week leaving the students to groan with the latest development.

(ASUU) Has Commenced An Indefinite Strike Nationwide Today

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced indefinite strike  nationwide  today,  national president of ASUU, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge has said.

He made this declaration, Monday, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) after their NEC meeting held at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.

Speaking to news men, he said: “We are embarking on indefinite strike nation wide because the Federal Government reneged in the Memorandum of Understanding MoU  signed with ASUU in 2009 to pay lecturers their earn allowance.”

According to Fagge, the Federal Government, in 2009 made a law to pay each lecturers N12,500 per month as earn allowance which it never did since 2009.

Manchester United offer Thiago stunning â‚7.2m-a- year contract

Manchester United offer Thiago stunning â‚7.2m-a- year contract

Manchester United will
triple Thiago's salary to
€140,000-a-week if the
midfielder completes his
move from Barcelona this
summer.
Goal reported on
Thursday that the 22-
year-old is set for talks with Camp Nou
officials where he will confirm his intention to
leave the club after agreeing terms in principle
with United.
Sources have said that United are confident of
completing a €18 million deal for the
midfielder despite late interest from Bayern
Munich and Barcelona's attempts to keep
Thiago at the club after chairman Sandro
Rosell met with his father Mazinho last week.
Thiago is on his post-season break and
Barcelona officials are said to have given up
hope of convincing the midfielder to stay after
he raised doubts over forthcoming first-team
opportunities at Camp Nou ahead of next
summer's World Cup.
His current contract runs until 2015 but his
exit clause plummeted from €90 million to
€18m after he failed to participate for a
stipulated amount of minutes in the 2012-13
season.
Speaking in February, the midfielder
confirmed he wanted "to get as many minutes
as I can" and was disappointed to be a
peripheral figure in Barca's midfield behind
the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc
Fabregas.
However, the buy-out clause is due to return
to €90m on August 1 if a deal for him to leave
is not completed by then.
The €7.2m wage package prepared by United
would see the midfielder's wages tower over
those earned by the likes of Phil Jones, Danny
Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa, who all earn
slightly above €81,000-a-week.
As such, United are keen to push through a
cut-price deal for the 22-year-old in the
coming weeks, with David Moyes set to
officially begin his tenure at Old Trafford on
Monday ahead of the first-team squad
reporting back for training at Carrington two
days later on July 3.
FRSC WARNS, CAUGHT DRIVING AND RECEIVING CALL YOU WILL BE ARRESTED AND JAILED

FRSC WARNS, CAUGHT DRIVING AND RECEIVING CALL YOU WILL BE ARRESTED AND JAILED

The Federal Road Safety Commission
(FRSC) has announced a newly adopted
strategy that would ensure that any person
caught using the mobile phone while driving,
would no longer be fined but immediately
taken to court and jailed.
Corp Marshal, FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka said
other offences like speed driving,
dangerous overtaking and overloading would
equally attract court action instead of the
usual fines.
The FRSC boss, who was speaking at a news
conference in Abuja, said these new
measures are part of a newly launched
campaign to reduce the increased spate of
road crashes in the country.
Commercial bus drivers are now expected
to install speed limit devices in their
vehicles so they henceforth should not
exceed 100km per hour.
National President of the National Union of
Road Transport Workers (NURTW)
however admitted that some drivers are
guilty of the aforementioned road accident
causing crimes.
The FRSC says it is partnering with several
organizations including oil companies to
fulfill its promise to make Nigerian roads
one of the safest in the world by the year
2020.
