A bomb attack Wednesday at the Federal College of
Education in Kontangora, Niger State, killed only the
female suicide bomber who carried out the attack,
Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, has said.
Witnesses had disputed details provided by the police that
there were no deaths beyond the woman who blew herself
up at the college.
One witness said at least one youth was killed in addition
to the attacker. Mr. Aliyu condemned the blast and urged
the people of Kontagora and other parts of the state to
remain calm, adding that a full scale investigation has
commenced into the incident, a statement by his press
secretary, Israel Ebije, said.
Mr. Aliyu called on the people of the state to keep vigil
against strange faces in their communities.
He added that the government had already doubled
security in all the schools and set up teams to ensure
continuous screening of people in school environments to
prevent evil perpetrators from infiltrating.
The governor said that the students affected by the blast
were receiving treatment for injuries and would soon be
discharged.
