•Over invitation for trial
By ROMANUS UGWU, Abuja
Super Eagles inform defender, Godfrey Obabona has expressed anger against the management and technical staff of Premiership entertaining team, Arsenal for inviting him for trial before offering him a deal, frowning that such decision more of less discredits him and the country at large.
Speaking to Daily Sunsports at the Super Eagles camp in Abuja, the Sunshine Stars FC of Akure defender argued that he could not see the rationale, why Barcelona should sign midfield attacking sensation, Nermay da Silva Santos, who was playing in the Brazilian league without trial and Arsenal could not do the same to him, describing his invitation for trial as an embarrassment.
Asked what happened to his Arsenal deal, the Super Eagles defender angrily thundered: “I don’t think anything happened because it is high time some of these clubs started respecting this country. Nigeria is a very big football playing country. “I continue to wonder why Barcelona should sign Nermay for £50 million from a Brazilian club even before Brazil won the Confederations Cup, only for Arsenal management to tell me, who participated in the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations to come for trial.
I think I should be above such request,” he quipped angrily. Speaking on his plans to take his career outside the shore of Nigeria, the Sunshine Stars FC skipper said: “I have no doubt that I will get a good deal in Europe very soon.
But I’m not going to be in a haste to accept any deal because I want to leave the country. “When we finished AFCON, there was no transfer window then and it would be wrong to think that since I did well in South Africa, I should desperately accept any offer from obscure countries like Iran or Iraq, Tahiti or Cote d’Ivoire in the name of playing professional football. I believe our league here is better than the ones in those countries,” he said.
On how urgent the deal would materialise and whether he would still be part of the CHAN tournament early next year, Obabona philosophically responded: “I hope you are not suggesting that I should reject good offers because I want to participate in CHAN.” If I leave we have players to step into my shoes but if I did not, I will be part of the tournament.”
