The Transition Monitoring Group has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for the smooth conduct of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
TMG, which is a coalition of civil society groups, said the Osun election was an improvement on the Ekiti State governorship election, which held in June.
The Deputy Chairperson of TMG, who led the team to observe the Osun election, Hajiya Goroso Giwa, told our correspondent that the conduct of the Osun election was very commendable, except for some hitches in the some parts of the state.
Giwa said, “There was a high turnout of voters and the election has been going on very well. We also observed that in the rural areas, they were able to manage the crowd and the time and the materials that were available. The problem we had was in Ikire in Ifelodun, because as of 2.45pm, some polling units there had not started voting.
“Some of the polling units affected included Unit 10, Balogun Imole. They concluded accreditation late, so voting started late; Polling Unit 3, Ward 4, Isale Ofe-Afon, there was also late accreditation and problem with crowd control; Adeyemi Market Ward 4 Unit 6, they also had problem of late accreditation and also had challenges of managing the crowd.”
She suggested that the number of INEC officials in urban areas should be increased in future elections, adding that security operatives should also be evenly distributed.
