Primary School Certificate Holder Dupes SAN
A 53-year-old primary school certificate holder, Moses
Olayemi, has been arraigned before an Ikeja High Court for
defrauding a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Olayemi, who was charged with two counts of conspiracy to
commit felony, was alleged to have defrauded Dr Aliyu
Salimon (SAN) under the pretext of conducting a National
Assembly screening for a Federal Government appointment.
According to Dr Salimon, he was coerced into paying N2.5
million into a Skye Bank account, only for him to realise that
he had been duped.
“I was on my way to Ibadan from Ilorin for an INEC case
when I received a call from someone who claimed that he
was the Chairman of a committee compiling the list of
people to be given Federal Government appointment.
“He asked me to send my CV, which I did from a nearby
cyber cafe. He then asked me to pay N150,000 for him to
get security report about me,” he said.
The learned SAN, however, pointed out that after several
conversations on phone, he sent N2.5 million to an account
belonging to one Moses Babatunde, adding that he paid the
money, believing it would help him get a better job.
“I paid the money thinking it would help me get a better job.
It was after I paid the money that I was told that the job had
been given to someone else,” he said.
In his own statement, the accused, Moses Olayemi, denied
the accusations, adding that he never collected any money
from the SAN.
“My friend, Akpan, asked me if I have a Skye Bank account
but since I did not haveone, I got that of my friend
Babatunde. It was when we went to withdraw the money
that we were apprehended and handed over to EFCC,” he
said.
The accused was denied bail by Justice Lawal Akapo on the
grounds that he is a convicted criminal who jumped bail in
Kano State and fled to Lagos.
Federal Government Bans the use of phones in prison
The Federal Government has banned the use of mobile
phones in all the prison formations by the inmates and
prison officials.
It also directed the Nigerian Prison Service authorities to
recover all handsets from inmates within 30 days.
Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, who handed down the
order on Saturday in Abuja, during an interactive meeting
with the senior officers of the Prison Service, decried
indecent dressing by the inmates.
He stated that no inmate should be allowed to wear their
choice of clothes or shoes, as is the practice presently, “no
matter highly placed they may be.”
Moro said, “I have visited some prisons in other countries
as the Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Nobody,
no matter highly placed you are, you don’t come to prison
with your phones, not even the minister of Interior as the
supervising minister over the prisons. So, why are you an
exception?
“Henceforth, no matter who you are including myself, that
nobody goes into prison with telephones. And so, as you
are going from here, create a meeting platform where all
the officers that work in the prisons as they walk into
prisons, they submit their phones and collect them when
they close.
“Secondly, it means that you have one month to recover
all the phones in the custody of inmates across the prison
formations. Within one month, all prison formation must
recover all telephones from inmates.”
The minister threatened to deal with the NPS management
if it failed to carry out the directive, adding that he would
know if the phones were not recovered from the inmates
as ordered.
“Don’t forget that I will know if you fail to do this, because
we have various agencies in Nigeria that are tracking
telephone usages and MTN and other service providers
could make available such facilities. The consequence of
not doing this, you should already know,” he told the
senior prison officials.
Commenting on the recent attack on Koton-karfe prison in
Kogi State, the Minister expressed dismay over the failure
of the prisons intelligence unit and the armed squad to foil
the plots that led to two attacks within two years.
Moro directed the Acting Comptroller-General of Prisons,
Aminu Suley, to investigate and report back to him, within
two weeks, allegations that a prison officer assisted the
attackers with arms.

Synagogue Building Felled By Controlled Demolition -police
The Homicide Department of the State Criminal Investigation
Department, Panti, Lagos, has submitted that the
Synagogue six-storey building could have been felled by a
techique termed controlled demolition. According to the
SCID, controlled demolition is when a building is felled using
chemical or electronic device. The position of the SCID was
given by the Head, Homicide Investigation and Crime Scene
Management at Panti, DSP Olusola Agoyi.
Agoyi testified on Wednesday at the resumed sitting of the
coroner, Magistrate O.A. Komolafe, probing the cause of the
September 12 tragedy. The accident claimed no fewer than
116 lives.Agoyi, in his testimony, said the speed and the rate
at which the Synagogue building caved in, coupled with
some dust-like smoke that followed were peculiar elements
seen only in a building felled by controlled demolition.
He said, “My Lord, when you use chemical or electronic
device to bring down a building, it is controlled demolition.“I
found out from the CCTV that the rate and the speed of the
fall of the building within seconds was just like that of a
controlled demolition.
“Aside that, the CCTV 3 captured some dust-like smoke
coming out of the collapsed building.”Further lending weight
to his claim, Agoyi referred the coroner to the oral account
of one of the 34 survivors that he said were interviewed in
the course of his intelligent findings.“
The panel also interviewed one Taiwo Temitayo Taiwo, aged
28 years, one of the surviving victims of the collapsed
building and I quote, ‘Immediately the building was coming
down, what I saw or heard was like a thunderous lightning
accompanied with a sound, hitting the wall as if someone
was using a saw to cut an iron, then the house collapsed,'”
Agoyi submitted.
